Bias attack in Morris County town being investigated
22 year-old Jesse Allard set out to have a drink or two to celebrate his birthday. He picked the wrong bar - a place called Trackside in Butler. A simple compliment to another patron on his jacket precipitated an alleged assault that resulted in Allard being hospitalized with serious injuries.
According to Allard, the owner of the bar himself held him while a bar patron beat him severely. He says he managed to get outside, where they broke his cell phone while he attempted to call police. At that moment, he says, a car pulled up and he begged the driver to call 911. The attackers said, "He IS the f***ing police," according to Allard.
The driver was an off-duty police officer Allard believes. The driver reportedly said "I'm not getting involved in this and drove away."
Allard then says he was beaten to the ground and was then run over by another car. He was left with severe injuries to his knees and the possibility of not walking again. Allard reports that anti-gay epithets, including the word "fag" were used during the assault.
Investigating Detective Colleen Pascale of the Butler Police Dept. has, according to Allard, retrieved a video of the car running him over from the security camera of a nearby business and the car has already been found. Pascale is seeking witnesses to the attack and Allard is hopeful that a witness can be found to corroborate the use of homophobic language. Corroboration is necessary to classify the attack as an anti-gay bias crime.
At Chilton Memorial Hospital in Pompton Lakes tonight Allard is awaiting evaluation by a specialist to determine his prognosis.
