Today, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that California’s ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. A victory for civil rights advocates, the 2-1 vote upheld a lower court’s ruling that Proposition 8 violates the rights of LGBT Americans. The much-anticipated ruling sets the stage for a possible showdown on same-sex marriage in the United States Supreme Court.

Death threats to LGBT students at Montclair State

It is often that acts of vandalism contain a message of hatred. Such was the case at Montclair’s campus, where unknown persons have targeted the LGBT community with death threats. University President Susan A. Cole in a campus-wide email said, “On January 26th, the words, “Die Fags,” were written in marker on the wall adjacent to room 104K in the Student Center CSI complex. On January 27th, a written note with the words, “you will die soon Faggots,” was reported to have been left under the door of room 104K. And, on January 30th, the words, “Fags will die on 2/7,” was written on the wall of the first floor women’s restroom near the Rathskellar.”

Party-line vote sends marriage bill to Assembly floor

In testimony lasting over six hours, the Assembly Judiciary Committee voted “yes” on NJ's same-sex marriage bill. The Thursday vote allows the Marriage Equality and Religious Exemption Act to be sent to the entire Assembly. As expected, the Democrats in the Committee voted for the bill while Republicans voted against. Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee similarly passed the bill along party lines.

Newark Mayor Booker calls on City to overcome hostilities toward LGBTQ

Newark Mayor Cory Booker said that even though he had never lived the reality of some of the harshness meted out to others, he has heard from too many people who have told stories of the hostilities they had to endure in the public school system. Hostilities, he said, which have inflamed ignominious moments, from markers being used to deface posters of the images of two people showing affection for each other, to tragic and violent moments, including the murder at Broad and Market, in the very heart of the city.

HUD Expands Rules to Include Housing Protections for LGBTs

Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development released new Equal Access to Housing rules that will increase discrimination protections for LGBTs. HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan explained the new policy to attendees at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s Creating Change conference. The changes specifically protect those seeking Federal Housing Administration mortgages and people in HUD-assisted or -insured housing from discrimination based on actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity or marital status.
